Good Morning Everyone,

I hope that you all enjoyed your two week March Break!! I cant wait to hear all about it!
A note from Mrs. Haywayrd

As of now, the school is now closed until Monday, April 6 and all trips and upcoming school events have been postponed – I will update you if anything changes. My blog will be updated on a daily basis for 9:00 AM. Our daily schedule will be changing as our expectations have changed over the weekend. I will be using Discord to assist with the learning. I will also be available via email and Bloomz, so please do not hesitate to reach out. Report cards and graphs are to be sent home on Friday, April 10. Spelling Bee rules and lists have been sent home – a new date for the Top 6 and SJA Spelling Bee to be announced soon. Caribou Math Contest will continue as scheduled.** For our coding unit, which begins in May, students will need to have a working laptop and email address, as they will be required to send their work to me via email. Gmail accounts were most popular last year!**

Inquiry into Mathematics
Today we will begin our new math unit: Fractions, Percents, Ratios and Rates. Today we learned how to find equivalent fractions. Equivalent fractions are fractions with different numerators (top number) and denominators (bottom number) that represent the same value or proportion of the whole.

To find an equivalent fraction with a greater numerator and denominator, multiply the numerator and denominator by the same number. For example, 5/12 = 10/24 (2 x 5 and 2 x 12) and 25/60 (5 x 5 and 5 x 12).

To find equivalent fractions with a lesser numerator and denominator, divide the numerator and denominator by the same number. For example, 24/60 = 4/10 (24/6 and 60/6). When we find an equivalent fraction by dividing, you simplify the fraction. 24/60 = 4/10 = 2/5 (4/2 and 10/2). This is the simplest form as the only factor into both 2 and 5 is 1.

Unit of Inquiry
Today we will be beginning our new Unit of Inquiry: Biodiversity. Students will discover what living and non-living things are, the characteristics of an organism and the basic needs of living things e.g. water, food etc.

Physical Education
Todays Physical Activity Challenge: Countdown 7 workout
-        Your challenge for today is to do the countdown 7 workout. You will start at 7 and do 7 jumping jacks, 7 sit-ups, and 7 lunges (each leg). Once you’re done you will do 6 jumping jacks, 6 sit-ups, and 6 lunges. Then 5, and then 4 and so on until you get down to 0 and finish the challenge. Remember to record yourself and send me the video to prove you’ve done it! Also don’t forget you need to be filling out your activity tracking sheet every day!

Todays learning goal: Students will demonstrate an understanding of what healthy eating looks like outside the school environment.
-      Reminder that you should be finding/making and eating healthy snacks. When you do, send me a picture of your snack and a description of how it is healthy. You need to send me 3 pictures of 3 different snacks by the end of the week!

French
Bonjour mes amis!
Aujourd’hui c’est mardi, le 24 mars 2020

I want to congratulate all students who joined me on Discord yesterday. It is a real challenge to understand a message and follow instructions in a foreign language without including the body language; we ended up translating here and there to make sure that we followed the designated time but overall, everyone was engaged and the online learning really proved our challenges.
Homework will be uploaded on Discord; you could write your answers directly and send it to my account sjimenez@stjudesacademy.com.

Stay safe! "S'en sortir, sans sortir"
