Good Afternoon Everyone,

I hope that you all enjoyed your two week March Break!! I know I sure did, but I am excited to get back to teaching all of you!!

A note from Mrs. Haywayrd

As of now, the school is now closed until Monday, April 6 and all trips and upcoming school events have been postponed – I will update you if anything changes. My blog will be updated on a daily basis for 9:00 AM. Our daily schedule will be changing as our expectations have changed over the weekend. I will be using Discord to assist with the learning. I will also be available via email and Bloomz, so please do not hesitate to reach out. Report cards and graphs are to be sent home on Friday, April 10. Spelling Bee rules and lists have been sent home – a new date for the Top 6 and SJA Spelling Bee to be announced soon. Physical Education

Good morning and welcome to online learning! Hopefully you have all had a restful March break! The way Phys. Ed. will run for the coming weeks is a little different than regular school hours. We will have a “live” time online on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 1:30-2 in my Phys. Ed. Discord channel. Here I will share expectations and requirements for the week and answer any questions students may have. There are two requirements for the students to complete throughout the week. These requirements include some physical activity and a health activity.
For the physical portion, each morning on Discord and on the classroom blog I will post a physical activity challenge. It will be something simple and I will do my best to show the students exactly what I want them to do. Students will need to record themselves completing the challenge and send it to me either on Discord or by email (if they have a YouTube channel they can upload it to YouTube and send me the link). To go along with this challenge I have also attached a tracker for students to keep track of their physical activity. Students are expected to be active for at least 30 minutes a day. This can be done at separate times throughout the day or all at once. The activity challenge I post can be a part of it but it will not be long enough to cover the full 30 minutes, so students will need to choose their own activity to fill the rest of their time. Once they record their activity on the calendar it will need to be signed by a parent or guardian. At the end of the week students will take a picture or scan a copy of their completed weekly calendar with signatures, and send it to me by email to prove they have been active every day! So go out and be active, but remember to continue practicing your social distancing and healthy habits!
Todays Physical Activity Challenge: 5 Minute Set Challenge
-        Your challenge for today is to do as many sets as you can in 5 minutes. A set includes 5 push-ups, 5 sit-ups, and 5 squats. Set a timer for 5 minutes and then start! Do 5 push-ups, 5 sit-ups, 5 squats (that’s 1 set) and start over with 5 push-ups. Continue until your timer is up. Don’t forget to record it and send it to me with your total number of sets done! Check out our Phys. Ed. Discord channel for my video and see how your classmates did!

For the Health portion, students will be given a task on Monday that needs to be worked on throughout the week and submitted on Friday. I will explain the task, work through questions and give examples during my live online time in my Discord classroom on Mondays from 1:30-2. I will also be available anytime from 9-3:45 on both Discord or by email to answer any questions students have or to give support. I will give reminders about these tasks daily on the classroom morning blog and on Discord, and I will be sharing my experiences through this time as well. Our first weekly health task is outlined below. I will give further details on Monday during our “class time”.
Todays learning goal: Students will demonstrate an understanding of what healthy eating looks like outside the school environment.
-        Our goal this week is to try to prepare and eat healthy foods. It is important that we continue to eat healthy and stay active to maintain our overall health. Your job this week is to come up with 3 healthy snacks and 1 healthy meal that you can eat at your house. Snacks can be as simple as a bowl of fruit, or something you actually have to make. Throughout the week you will need to send me pictures of your healthy snacks that you are making and eating. You will also need to work with your parents to help make a healthy meal. This could be breakfast, lunch or dinner, but it has to be healthy and it has to be homemade. Once you have made your meal, send me a picture with a description of what it is and how it is healthy. Keep in mind that when cooking you should always have a parent around to help out and make sure everything is safe!

French
Dear St. Jude’s Academy Families;

As all schools and public places are being shut down until April 6th, 2020; we’re all facing new experiences through the current situation. It is important that we remain in solidarity for our community of young learners and learn new challenges and values in life.
 Starting on Monday, March 23rd, I’m planning to have a live cast through Skype (see the attached hours for each Grade level); the expectations for every day will be to maintain exposure to the French language by interacting and completing some written exercises. The same way we used to have our Ketchup Club, I’m adding some extra hours for individual assistance to go over previous questions and concerns in French. I will be sending pictures, attachments and a list of links for further practice in French. In order to do this, students will be required to have their own Skype account and have a notebook or paper, and a pencil or pen ready to either take notes or respond to a question.
Please note that the Grade 5s Trip to The Meadowvale Theatre (on March 31st) has to be canceled; we’re waiting for further notice to see if it will be postponed or if we will receive a refund.
At St. Jude’s Academy, we want our students to be happy and eager to learn; therefore we want to explain the situation so they don’t develop an anxiety but rather, take “Action” by using new precautions and keep developing the positive attitude and academic skills to help them to grow.  Here are some links that could also help to keep the exposure to the French language.
