Good Afternoon Everyone!

I hope you had a terrific night! Tomorrow is a day 2 (Terry Fox Run). Students are encouraged to come to school in their SJA gym uniform. Don’t forget about those pledges!! I will be accepting pledges until the end of the day tomorrow!! We are also encouraging all students to bring a ‘Toonie for Terry’ and are asking that students come to school dressed in their SJA gym pants/shorts along with their house coloured gym shirt. If students do not own a house t-shirt, they may wear their regular gym shirt. Also, hot lunch payments are due tomorrow!

We watched the Terry Fox video today to remember his journey across most of Canada

We also sang the Terry Fox song in French

Inquiry into Mathematics

Today in math we learned about comparing and ordering numbers. For a practice activity one student would read the largest number in the chart that was in their textbook out loud and their partner would record the number on a place value chart. Then they would take turns back and forth until they had all of the number ordered from least to greatest. Then as a class we compared the area in km squared for Colombia, South Africa, and Thailand.

Points to Remember

Multiplication and division strategies - For example, for multiplication 100 x 10 = 1,000 (we multiply 1 x 1 to get 1 and then add 3 zeros – 2 in 100 and 1 in 10 = 1,000) and for division 1,000,000/100,000 = 10 (1/1 = 1 and then we took away 5 zeros from 100,000 and 5 zeros from 1,000,000 which left us with 10).

Standard form is 3,961. Expanded form would be 3,000 + 900 + 60 + 1 and number-word form would be 3 thousand, 961. We also realized that when using a place value chart, each group of three place values is called a period. With in each period the digits of a number are read as hundred, tens, and ones.

Place value chart:

Millions Period
Thousands Period
Units Period

H M
T M
M
H T
T T
T
H
O

H M – hundred million
T M – ten million
M – million

H T – hundred thousand
T T – ten thousand
T – thousand

H – hundreds
T – tens
O – ones

Unit of Inquiry

Today in UOI we joined Mrs. Hocevar's class to do two experiments to examine solid, liquids and gases. Our first experiment we put vinegar in a bottle and had baking soda in a balloon. We attached the balloon to the bottle and lifted the balloon. Our next experiment was very fun! We had two jars filled with heavy whipping cream. Each student got a chance to shake the jar.. Ask me what happened! Then we came back to class and completed a fill-in-the-blank worksheet.

Ready for some fun!
