Inquiry into Language
Today in language students wrote their first spelling test. Please sign and return spelling tests on Monday, and please complete any corrections x 5. We also went over the expectations when completing Percy Jackson comprehension question. I am looking for full sentences that begin with a capital letter and end with either a period, exclamation point, or question mark. To use part of the question in the answer, for example: Q: What kind of school is Yancy Academy? Yancy Academy is a School for troubled kids in upstate New York. I reminded them to use the book to help with spelling and to be sure to answer each question completely, with support from the book.
We also had our first day of technology. Students started to practice their typing by learning the home row.
Inquiry into Mathematics
Today in math we explore multiples and common multiples. We started off our class by doing an explore activity to find out how many people received t-shirts, ball-caps, or both from a radio station contest by using multiples of 3 and 7. Then we found the multiples and common multiples for 4 and 6. When finding common multiples, write out all the multiples first and then go and find the multiples that are in common.
For example
Multiples of 4: 4, 8, 12, 16, 18
Multiples of 6: 6, 12, 18
The common multiples are 12 and 18
A Common Multiple is a number that is a multiple of two or more numbers
Points to Remember
Multiplication and division strategies - For example, for multiplication 100 x 10 = 1,000 (we multiply 1 x 1 to get 1 and then add 3 zeros – 2 in 100 and 1 in 10 = 1,000) and for division 1,000,000/100,000 = 10 (1/1 = 1 and then we took away 5 zeros from 100,000 and 5 zeros from 1,000,000 which left us with 10).
Standard form is 3,961.
Expanded form would be 3,000 + 900 + 60 + 1
Number-word form would be 3 thousand, 961.
We also realized that when using a place value chart, each group of three place values is called a period. With in each period the digits of a number are read as hundred, tens, and ones.
