Good Afternoon Everyone!

I hope everyone kept warm this weekend. Tomorrow is day 1 (Reading buddies).

Our chilly Canadian winter has officially arrived as we are experiencing below 0 temperatures. This is a kind reminder that all students must wear proper winter items for recess; this includes coat, hat, mittens, scarf, snow pants and boats. If students do not come to school with these items they will still be asked to go outside, so please come prepared!

Today the Grade 5 team sent home a notice regarding Fridays lesson for UOI. On Friday, January 18th, all students will spend the period learning about both reproductive systems. We will focus on images, proper terminology and puberty. Mrs. Hocevar and myself will be teaching the girls, and Mr. Conte and Mr. Orr will be teaching the boys. Please have a read and let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

A note from Mr. Foster, Ms. Gandy, and Ms. Brasil:
As part of our summative assessment the Grade One classes have decided to open a market to complement our organization unit. The market will include fruits, vegetables, drinks, and other healthy snacks. It will be held in rooms 25, 28 and 29. The market will take place all day Thursday, January. 24th and Friday, January. 25th. All profits made will be donated to the Sick Kid’s Hospital.

Re-registrations packages have been sent home. All completed forms are due back no later than February 11th, 2019, in order to save your spots.

Today we began a new thing in our class. Each day I will select a student that has shown the IB attitudes, attributes and skills throughout the school day to be our star student. There name will be displayed on our community bubble until the following day. Congratulations to our first star student, Charlie!

Inquiry into Mathematics

Today in math we focused on finding the median. There are two steps (sometimes 3) to find the median.
1. organize the set of data from least to greatest
2. find the middle number
3. If the median has two numbers then you must add them together and divide by 2.

To find the mean you add up the total number and then divide by the total number of data. For example if the numbers in our data are 8, 10, 6, 4 you add them up to get 28 then divide it by 4 to get 7. Therefore your mean is 7.

The mode is the number that appears the most in a given set of data. For example if the numbers in our data were 3, 6, 4, 8 4. 2, 9, 4 our mode would be 4.

For example: 2, 4, 5, 7, 8 - the middle number is 5

Example with two medians: 2, 4, 4, 5, 7, 8 .  4+5= 9 / 2 = 4.5. Therefore, the median is 4.5

These two units are both short units and it is looking like our Data Management math test will take place on Monday, January 21st and our Probability test will take place on Friday, February 1st. There will be no review for Data Management, as students will be conducting their own survey and graphing the results.

Inquiry into Language

Today in language students began their introduction for their speeches. If it was not completed in class it is for homework due tomorrow, as we will move onto our body paragraphs tomorrow (Body 1). Since we are focusing on speeches for the next couples of weeks students will be asked to complete all spelling activities at home for homework. Spelling lesson #16 is due Wednesday.

Unit of Inquiry

Today was our last day studying the respiratory system. We first had a pop quiz labeling the respiratory system, and then we watched a Bill Nye video while completing a fill in the blank activity.

* * A notice has been sent home regarding our lesson on the reproductive system taking place this Friday. Please read the notice and let me know if there is any questions or concerns.
