Good Afternoon Everyone!
I hope you had an excellent evening! Tomorrow is a day 1 (reading buddies).
School photos have been sent home. If you would like to order photos they must be filled out and handed in by Thursday, November 22nd.
Oakwood Academy is holding a Poinsettia fundraiser for the holiday season, to raise money for some new sensory items. The Poinsettias are red, pink or white and make a wonderful holiday gift, and are a nice way to spread holiday cheer. Order forms were sent home today. The class that sells the most Poinsettias will win a $50 gift card!! Order between November 1st and November 30th. The only form of payment will be cash. Thank you in advance!
A kind reminder about Science Fair. Friday November 16th, 2018. Students will be presenting their projects to the judges. They will have 2 minutes to present and have one minutes for questions from the judges. Students are welcome to bring their experiment in as long as it is small enough to fit in their assigned spot for presentations. Please join us to view our Science Fair projects at 2:30pm!
Unfortunately Book fair has been postponed until the first week on February. I will update my blog closer to the date.
March Break Camp registration forms were sent home. If you are interested please fill in the form and bring it back to school as soon as possible.
*Please note that students doing any after school activity, soccer, karate, yoga, etc. will be charged until 4:00 PM in aftercare, when they will be dismissed to their program with their coach!**
Don't forget about Polar Expressions Publishing! The poetry deadline is November 16th, 2018 and the short story deadline is November 23rd, 2018.
Inquiry into Mathematics
We sorted regular and irregular figures into a Venn diagram and sorted triangles by scalene, isosceles and equilateral and by their angles (acute, right and obtuse)
Our next unit, Geometry, is a short one…there is only 5 lessons. It is looking like the test for Geometry will take place on Friday, November 23rd.
Points to Remember:
An acute angle is less than 90 degrees. A right angle is 90 degrees and takes the shape of an L. An obtuse angle is greater than 90 degrees. A straight line is 180 degrees and makes a straight line. A reflex angle is an angle that falls between 180 and 360 degrees.
In order to measure a reflex angle, you measure the angle below the 180 degree straight line. Then you add up the numbers. For example, if the angle measures 13 degrees, then 13 + 180 = 193 degrees.
When constructing a reflex angle you need to do the opposite. You take the angle measurement and subtract it from the 180 degree straight line. That angle will tell you how to draw it. For example, 205 – 180 = 25 degrees. Using the 180 degree line, measure the 25 degree angle and draw it.
Inquiry into Language
Practicing our song! They sound lovely
Unit of Inquiry
Today we read and completed activities on Tutankhamen and we learned about important Dates in Egypt’s History through creating a timeline.
It is hard to believe, but we are nearing the end of our second Unit of Inquiry. For our summative, students will be required to recreate an ancient artifact from one of the three civilization we learned about. An information package and rubric will be sent home sometime next week. We will begin our in-class summative on Monday, November 19th and the due date will be Thursday, November 29th. A kind reminder that all work is to be completed during class time only, unless other wise stated.
