Tomorrow is day 6 (Reading buddies).  A kind reminder aftercare payments are due January 15th.  Kappa students ONLY will receive a casual day on Thursday for bringing in the most clothes during the upper school clothing drive. Scholastic orders are due January 17. A kind reminder that all re-registration packages are due February 18th.

The next Caribou contest will be taking place Wednesday, January 15^th. Arrive at 7:15 am for a 7:30 am start. Bring your own charged device.  The interactive question will be FRUIT SALAD which you can practice now on Caribou’s games page. This is a new game. Students, please test it and let Caribou know of any problems. There is no history question in the January contest.

Mr. Foster’s Farmers Market and Ms. Gandy’s Groceries

As part of their summative assessment the grade one classes have decided to open a market to complement their organization unit. The market will include fruits, vegetables, drinks and other healthy snacks. It will be held in rooms 12 and 18. The market will take place all day Thursday, January 23^rd and Friday, January 24^th. All profits made will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House.

Our next extra-curricular activity is skiing/snowboarding at Glen Eden Ski Resort. The dates of the trip are January 22, February 19 and March 4. We will be leaving at 7:00 AM sharp and returning by 4:00 PM at the latest. All rentals are included, however students are more than welcome to bring their own. Please do not order hot lunch for these days as we will be eating lunch at the ski hill – students are welcome to bring money to purchase food and drink items. Students must ensure they are dressed in appropriate ski gear; warm socks, long johns with comfy clothes, snow pants, warm mitts, a face protector and a ski jacket. Please note that if students chose skiing, they will ski all three times. If students pick snowboarding, they will snowboard all three times. All students will have to pass each level before they are granted permission to ski on the big hill, no matter what their experience. 

Inquiry into Language

Today students started to write paragraph #3. If it was not completed in class, it is for homework due tomorrow. Moms and dads there is a bit of language homework tonight, even for you!! Can you please help edit your students paragraphs 1-3 in pen and initial it. Thank you :) 

A note on speeches

Speeches are a 4-5 week process. A package was sent home, as students needed to complete some work at home over the holidays. Grade 5 students will be expected to write and memorize a 3-5 minute persuasive speech on a topic of their choice; research will be needed, along with proper citation. When we are back from the break we will begin by writing our three body paragraphs; one a day using teacher guided writing. We will then write our introduction and conclusion. Time will be given edit, re-write and memorize in class. Please see below an outline of dates that we must stick to (as found in the speech package)!

Inquiry into Mathematics

Today we learned about different types of graphs. We learned about a pictograph, a circle graph, a bar graph, a line graph and scatter plot. We learned about the key items we must include when completing a graph: title, labels, scale, a key, colour and to always use a ruler!

Data Management is a short unit. Our test for this unit will consist of students creating a survey question, surveying a certain number of students, creating three separate graphs and inferring information from their graphs. This will roughly take 3 days to complete. As of now, it will begin Friday, January 17 and continue till Tuesday, January 21. Please note no review will be completed for this unit. Our next math unit is also a short one, Patterns in Numbers and Geometry, and will take us until the first week of February. 

Reminders:
Inferring is a conclusion we reach by reasoning. Data can be displayed using a line graph, bar graph and a circle graph. A "break" in a graph allows you to jump numbers on a scale. 

To find the mean, you add up the total number of all the data and then divide by how many numbers are in that set of data.

8, 8, 8, 8, 9, 9, 9, 11, 12, 20 are the number in the set of data.

1) Add up all of the numbers = 102

2) Divide by 10 (as there are 10 numbers in the set of data) = 102/10 = 10.2

The median is the middle number when the data is arranged in order. When there is an odd number of data, the median is the middle number. When there is an even number of data, the median is the mean of the two numbers.

95, 92, 87, 85, 80, 78, 76, 73, 70, 66, 54 are the numbers in a set of data. The median of this set is 78 because there are a odd number of data. There are 5 numbers before 78 and 5 numbers after 78.

95, 92, 87, 85, 80, 78, 76, 73, 72, 70, 66, 54 are the numbers in a set of data. Because there is an even number of data, we have to find the mean to find the median. The middle numbers are 75 and 76, therefore 78 + 76/2 = 77 and that is the median.

The mode is the number that occurs most frequently in a given set of data.

Unit of Inquiry

Today we went over our summative and I put students into groups. Students also began to think about their summatives which will take us from now until Thursday, January 30, when presentations will take place. This summative will consist of researching and preparing a presentation about a human body system that we did not cover in class. Students will be using their summative package, which will assist them in completing the summative. Students will be responsible for including a diagram of the system, what organs are part of that system, how the system works, what that system is responsible for, how that system is connected to others in the body, and how to keep that system healthy.
