Inquiry into Language
Today students worked on their student reflections for our units of inquiry. Tomorrow we will complete pg.10 of the report card and work on our student-led conference packages.

Inquiry into Mathematics
Today students explored rounding decimals to the nearest whole number, nearest tenth and the nearest hundredths. To help us round we can use a number line or use our rounding rules. If its 0-4 we round down and if its 5-9 we round up.

As of right now our test well be Friday, December 13th.

Points to Remember
Most large numbers are written in short form instead of having to write the large number in standard form. For example, 5 ½ million is written in standard form as 5, 500, 000. 42, 400, 000 can be written as the decimal 42.4 million. Keep in mind the rounding rules; 0-4 round to the floor, 5-9 round to the sky.
Exploring thousands and writing them as fractions and decimals. We used a place value chart to help us.

Tens
Ones
.
Tenths
Hundredths
Thousandths

We also used base ten blocks to help. Please see picture below. A fraction is written as 314/1000. We say it as three-hundred and fourteen thousandths. The decimal would be 0.314.
Comparing and Ordering Decimals: There is 3 different ways that we can order decimals. The first way we can order decimals is by using base ten blocks, the second way is using a place-value chart, and lastly we can use a timeline.

Unit of Inquiry
Today students continued to work on their Ancient Civilization summative. Tonight students are to complete their artifact and the good copy of their written component.

Please join us on Friday, November 29, as we open the Grade 5 Museum of Ancient Civilizations from 2:30-3:15 PM. This will allow Grade 5 parents the opportunity to view the students hard work. Please see flyer posted below and the one that was sent home.

For our Ancient Civilizations summative students will be recreating an ancient artifact from one of the civilizations we studied. As of now, we will be beginning the summative the week of November 18th with a due date of Friday, November 29th. A kind reminder that all summatives are to be done in class only, and to not be done at home unless otherwise stated.
