Good Afternoon Everyone!

I hope you had a great day! Tomorrow is day 5 (Gym and Music). Please wear your gym clothes to school and bring your gym shoes. Students will change into their SJA school day uniform after gym.
Casual Day forms have been sent home. If you would like your child to participate, please complete the form and send in the $20 cash to me no later than October 25th.

A note from Ms. Hayward - October 17 marked the first day of Secret Path Week.
Commemorating the legacies of Gord Downie (died Oct. 17, 2017)and Chanie Wenjack (died Oct. 23, 1966 - died after running away from residential school and attempting to walk home). Calling on Canadians to answer Downie’s call to action to “DO SOMETHING” to learn about Residential Schools, their impact on Canadian Indigenous people and communities and Canada as a whole, and to learn about and celebrate Indigenous Culture as an  important part of Canadian culture.

As you may notice, the Library Bulletin Board this week is all about ReconciliACTION.  It features challenges, mostly from the Indian Horse Next150 Challenges site.  Each challenge aims to promote learning about indigenous culture and indigenous rights.  I hope we can try different challenges on our own or as classes (photos, lists, etc. can be added to the bulletin board).

I'd like to challenge you to do a challenge with your class at some point in the year (and share with me so we can add it to the library boards/blogs).  Or share something else you've done to learn about indigenous culture.

This week I've completed the "Whose Land Challenge".  I want to challenge you/your class to do the same and have students present a proper acknowledgement at morning announcements.

Inquiry into Language
Today students worked on chapter 15/ 16 comprehension questions. If it was not completed in class it is for homework.

Inquiry into Mathematics
Today we learned how to calculate the surface area of a rectangular prism. To find the area we must use the formula: L x W (Length x Width).  Length is how long a side is (11cm - see below picture). Width is how wide a side is (5cm - see below picture). We learned that the opposite sides of a rectangular prism are congruent. Therefore, to find the surface area of a rectangular prism you must calculate the areas of the front, side and top faces. Then, add the total areas and multiply the sum by 2.

We also went over our math test from last week. Math tests were sent home today. Please look over it tonight. Sign and return it tomorrow.

Here is a video step by step how to calculate the surface area of a rectangular prism: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jt_fMEg7KXs

For example: using the picture below.

Area of the front face: 11 cm x 6 cm  = 66 cm squared

Area of the side face: 6 cm x 5 cm = 30 cm squared

Area of the top face: 11cm x 5 cm = 55 cm squared

( 66 + 30 + 55 ) x 2 = 151 cm squared x 2  = 302 cm squared

Therefore, the surface area of the prism is 302 cm squared

Points to Remember

The small hand tells the hour, the large hand tells the minutes, and the skinny hand tells the seconds.

Every small mark on a clock represents the minutes. The total number of minutes between each number on a clock is 5.

A quarter after is 15 minutes after, half-past is 30 minutes after, and a quarter to is 15 minutes to the next hour.

Before 10:00am, you write a 0 in front of the hour. After noon, you ad 12 to the hour. For example: 2 o'clock in the afternoon would be 12:00 + 2:00 = 14:00 24- hour notation

AM – 12:00 midnight to 11:59 AM
PM – 12:00 noon to 11:59 PM

12:00 = 00:00
1:00 = 13:00
2:00 = 14:00
3:00 = 15:00
4:00 = 16:00
5:00 = 17:00
6:00 = 18:00
7:00 = 19:00
8:00 = 20:00
9:00 = 21:00
10:00 = 22:00
11:00 = 23:00
12:00 = 24:00

Estimating using friendly numbers  ( $499.50 + $228.85  e.g. 500 + 200 or 250 = 700 or 750).

Rounding rules. If a number is 4 and below - let it go (round down) 23 = 20.  3. If the number is 5 and above give it a shove (round up) 26=30.

Unit of Inquiry
Today we read about the "tough life" boys and girls had in ancient Egypt then we made a comparison chart on the lives and boys and girls, as well compared education from ancient Egypt to our education now. We also learned about what they ate. They ate lots of bread, fish, and flax.

The summative for this unit will have students recreating an ancient artifact from one of the civilizations we studied. More information to come closer to the end of the unit! As of now, we will be beginning the summative the week of November 18th with a due date of Friday, November 29th.
