Good Afternoon Everyone!

I hope you had a great day! Tomorrow is day 4 (Library).
Casual Day forms have been sent home. If you would like your child to participate, please complete the form and send in the $20 cash to me no later than October 25th.

A note from Ms. Hayward - October 17 marked the first day of Secret Path Week.
Commemorating the legacies of Gord Downie (died Oct. 17, 2017)and Chanie Wenjack (died Oct. 23, 1966 - died after running away from residential school and attempting to walk home). Calling on Canadians to answer Downie’s call to action to “DO SOMETHING” to learn about Residential Schools, their impact on Canadian Indigenous people and communities and Canada as a whole, and to learn about and celebrate Indigenous Culture as an  important part of Canadian culture.

As you may notice, the Library Bulletin Board this week is all about ReconciliACTION.  It features challenges, mostly from the Indian Horse Next150 Challenges site.  Each challenge aims to promote learning about indigenous culture and indigenous rights.  I hope we can try different challenges on our own or as classes (photos, lists, etc. can be added to the bulletin board).

I'd like to challenge you to do a challenge with your class at some point in the year (and share with me so we can add it to the library boards/blogs).  Or share something else you've done to learn about indigenous culture.

This week I've completed the "Whose Land Challenge".  I want to challenge you/your class to do the same and have students present a proper acknowledgement at morning announcements.

Inquiry into Language
Today we did not have language as we had our Scientist in the School come to visit.

Inquiry into Mathematics
Today we learned how to estimate and calculate money to $10,000. We went over how to estimate using friendly numbers  ( $499.50 + $228.85  e.g. 500 + 200 or 250 = 700 or 750). We also went over our rounding rules. If a number is 4 and below - let it go (round down) 23 = 20.  3. If the number is 5 and above give it a shove (round up) 26=30

Points to Remember

The small hand tells the hour, the large hand tells the minutes, and the skinny hand tells the seconds.

Every small mark on a clock represents the minutes. The total number of minutes between each number on a clock is 5.

A quarter after is 15 minutes after, half-past is 30 minutes after, and a quarter to is 15 minutes to the next hour.

Before 10:00am, you write a 0 in front of the hour. After noon, you ad 12 to the hour. For example: 2 o'clock in the afternoon would be 12:00 + 2:00 = 14:00 24- hour notation

AM – 12:00 midnight to 11:59 AM
PM – 12:00 noon to 11:59 PM

12:00 = 00:00
1:00 = 13:00
2:00 = 14:00
3:00 = 15:00
4:00 = 16:00
5:00 = 17:00
6:00 = 18:00
7:00 = 19:00
8:00 = 20:00
9:00 = 21:00
10:00 = 22:00
11:00 = 23:00
12:00 = 24:00

Unit of Inquiry
Today we learned began to learn about Ancient Egypt. We read about the Nile River and completed an activity sheet. We also learned about the geography of Egypt. If it was not completed for class it is for homework. We also attended our matter SITS workshop and showed Scientist Marsha all that we leaned during our What's the Matter Unit. We completed some hands-on experiments and had a ton of fun! Thank you Scientist Marsha!
