Inquiry into Mathematics
Today in math we learned about combined transformations. Remember to label the vertices of the final image A" B" C" D". Read as "A double prime". Also, please remember to carefully read the questions to ensure you are answering the questions properly. For example, if a questions asks you to rotate the image 180 degrees. Label vertices A' B' C' D', and then reflect in a vertical line through 6 on the horizontal axis; you must rotate it first and then reflect it.
Points to Remember:
A translation is when a figure slides from one place to another. For example, if you have the point A (5,3) and you translate it four squares right and one square down, the new point will be A' (9,2). We say 'A prime' and write A’ when referring to the points on the new image. Remember when a figure is translated, all of the points are translated by the same value
A reflection is when a figure is reflected in the mirror line (a line in which a figure is reflect) to create a congruent image. After a reflection, a figure and its image are congruent (same size and shape but no always the same orientation, usually faces opposite ways, and are the exact same distance from the mirror line.
A rotation is when a figure turned about (around) a fixed point, called the turn centre. For example, if you have the point A (2,7) and you rotate it a 3/4 clockwise turn about (6,7), your new point will be A' (6,3). After a rotation, a figure and its image are congruent (same size and shape but not always same orientation), may face different ways, and are the exact same distance from the turn point.
Unit of Inquiry
Today we continued to work on our biodiversity summative. For this summative students will research a species of their choice and create a podcast to inform the rest of us about the species they chose. It may be an audio or video podcast. The podcast is due on Friday, April 26th.
Our final unit of the year will be about coding. All students will be required to have a working laptop, not device, for this unit. They will be expected to bring it to school each and every day. Students will also be expected have their own email account. A Gmail account is preferred, as we can easily share our projects. Our coding unit begin on Monday, April 29th.
