Good Afternoon Everyone!

I hope you had a wonderful night! Tomorrow is a Day 1 (Reading buddies) and St. Patrick’s Spirit Day - please wear green tomorrow. All SITS form and payments for biodiversity are due tomorrow. 

What a terrific final ski day we had. The sun was out and shinning down on us for most of the day and it was beautiful. We saw many new faces up on the big hill. I want to congratulate everyone on how well they did today. Not once did anyone ever give up!! I had a blast skiing with many of you and look forward to doing it again next year! We hope you all had a wonderful day skiing!

We have another gym field trip coming up. We are going to Cave Rock Climbing. Please fill in the permission form and the waiver (both sides) and return no later than Friday, March 29th. 

March Break Homework: (Optional). Today I sent home two packages for students to complete during the March Break if they wish. It will help prepare students for our next DRA, our current math unit and to prepare for our next Unit of Inquiry.

Lately, we have been seeing a lot of hoodies that are not in presentable condition. If hoodies have the letters of the house peeling off (or have already come off) and are overall not in presentable condition, they will not be allowed to be worn. New ones must be purchased if they are going to continue wearing them.

Please ensure that students are sent to school with proper outdoor gear - winter coats, hats, mitts, winter boots, scarves, etc. Students will not be allowed to stay in at recess if they are not dressed accordingly. I thank you for your support.

Points to remember:

An improper fraction is when the numerator is a bigger number then the denominator. A mixed number is when there is a whole number plus a fraction.

To convert an improper fraction to a mixed number, we divide the numerator by the denominator, subtract, and then the remainder becomes our new numerator. For example, 5/13 - 5 goes into 13 2 times, which is 10 - 13 subtract 10 is 3. Therefore, my mixed number is 2 and 3/5.

To convert a mixed number into an improper fraction we multiply the whole number by the denominator and add the product to the numerator. For example, 2 and 3/4 - 2 x 4 = 8 +3 = 11. Therefore, the improper fraction is 11/4.

Equivalent fractions name the same amount. 

To find an equivalent fraction with a greater numerator and denominator, multiply the numerator and denominator by the same number. For example, 5/12 = 10/24 (2 x 5 and 2 x 12) and 25/60 (5 x 5 and 5 x 12). 

To find equivalent fractions with a lesser numerator and denominator, divide the numerator and denominator by the same number. For example, 24/60 = 4/10 (24/6 and 60/6). When we find an equivalent fraction by dividing, you simplify the fraction. 24/60 = 4/10 = 2/5 (4/2 and 10/2). This is the simplest form as the only factor into both 2 and 5 is 1.
