Dear SJA Lower School (JK to Grade 6) Families,
An annual event in the Lower School is our highly anticipated Year-Ahead Day. Students look forward to this fun tradition at St. Jude’s Academy where they get to skip ahead and spend the day in the next grade. Teachers will let students know who their Year-Ahead Day teacher is at the end of day on Friday, February 7, 2020.
Please note that the placement for this day does not indicate class placement for the following school year.
Sincerely,
The SJA Lower School Team

Our next extra-curricular activity is skiing/snowboarding at Glen Eden Ski Resort. The dates of the trip are January 22, February 19 and March 4. Please do not order lunch for these days; it will not be saved nor will a reimbursement be given. We will be leaving at 7:00 AM and returning by 4:00 PM at the latest. All rentals are included, however students are more than welcome to bring their own. Please do not order hot lunch for these days as we will be eating lunch at the ski hill – students are welcome to bring money to purchase food and drink items. Students must ensure they are dressed in appropriate ski gear; warm socks, long johns with comfy clothes, snow pants, warm mitts, a face protector (if possible) and a ski jacket. Please note that if students chose skiing, they will ski all three times. If students pick snowboarding, they will snowboard all three times. All students will have to pass each level before they are granted permission to ski on the big hill, no matter what their experience.

March Break Camps
Forms have been sent home regarding SJA’s awesome Adventure Camp. The wonderful camp will run from Monday to Friday both weeks of the March Break (March 9-13 & March 16-20) and is offered to student from JK to Grade 6. Field trips will take place on Thursday afternoons. Meal plans are also included if you chose to do so. Cash or QuickBooks payments only please. Don’t delay; register today!

Inquiry into Language
Today we continued our novel study Shannen and the Dream for a School. For this novel study students will be put into literature circle groups and completing different tasks each week. Students will get the opportunity to be a word wizard, summarizer and literary critic. Today students found out their groups and their roles for the next couple weeks. Each Friday / some Thursdays we will have a literature circle meeting where student will share their findings. Please come prepared!

Inquiry into Mathematics
Today students their pre-assessment for our new unit: Perimeter, Area and Volume.

Unit of Inquiry
Today we learned about the different levels of government. We watched a short video to help us. In Canada we have a federal, provincial and municipal government. The federal government is in charge of our country. The provincial government is in charge of provinces/territories, and municipal government is in charge of cities e.g. Bonnie Crombie is in charge of Mississauga. Students completed a cut and paste activity to sort the different levels of government and what they are responsible for.
