Good Afternoon Everyone,

I hope you had a wonderful day! Tomorrow is day 1 (Music). We will not have gym tomorrow as we will be discussing the reproductive system in groups (girls and boys). Please remember to wear your house tie.

Please have a small chat with your child regarding proper hygiene with regards to coughing/sneezing and hand washing! Please know we are taking all precautions necessary at the school and in the classroom.

A note regarding re-registration packages:

Our next extra-curricular activity is skiing/snowboarding at Glen Eden Ski Resort. The dates of the trip are January 22, February 19 and March 4. Please do not order lunch for these days; it will not be saved nor will a reimbursement be given. We will be leaving at 7:00 AM and returning by 4:00 PM at the latest. All rentals are included, however students are more than welcome to bring their own. Please do not order hot lunch for these days as we will be eating lunch at the ski hill – students are welcome to bring money to purchase food and drink items. Students must ensure they are dressed in appropriate ski gear; warm socks, long johns with comfy clothes, snow pants, warm mitts, a face protector (if possible) and a ski jacket. Please note that if students chose skiing, they will ski all three times. If students pick snowboarding, they will snowboard all three times. All students will have to pass each level before they are granted permission to ski on the big hill, no matter what their experience.

March Break Camps
Forms have been sent home regarding SJA’s awesome Adventure Camp. The wonderful camp will run from Monday to Friday both weeks of the March Break (March 9-13 & March 16-20) and is offered to student from JK to Grade 6. Field trips will take place on Thursday afternoons. Meal plans are also included if you chose to do so. Cash or QuickBooks payments only please. Don’t delay; register today!

Inquiry into Language
Today we continued to recite our speeches in class. I have provided students with feedback! Our in-class speech competition is Monday, February 3rd.

A note on speeches
Speeches are a 4-5 week process. A package was sent home, as students needed to complete some work at home over the holidays. Grade 5 students will be expected to write and memorize a 3-5 minute persuasive speech on a topic of their choice; research will be needed, along with proper citation. When we are back from the break we will begin by writing our three body paragraphs; one a day using teacher guided writing. We will then write our introduction and conclusion. Time will be given edit, re-write and memorize in class. Please see below an outline of dates that we must stick to (as found in the speech package)!

Inquiry into Mathematics
Today students began to work on our patterns in numbers and geometry math review. The test till take place on Tuesday, February 4th.

Reminders:
We can represent patterns through using a model, a table, writing a pattern rule and drawing a graph. Remember when writing a pattern rule you must write: Start at 1. Add 4 each time (example).

Input/Output: Remember that the pattern rule must work for all input numbers. All graphs must have a title, an x (Input numbers) and y axis (Output numbers) label and an appropriate scale.

 Euler’s Formula and other patterns for prisms - the number of faces + the number of vertices – 2 = the number of edges (F + V – 2 = E). For example, a triangular prism has 5 faces and 6 vertices. Therefore, 5 + 6 – 2 = 11 – 2 = 9, so a triangular prism has 9 edges.
Some other patterns for prisms are:

1) The number of faces of a prism is 2 more than the number of sides on the base – A hexagon has 6 sides, therefore 6 + 2 = 8, so 8 faces.

2) The number of vertices on a prism is double the number of sides on the base – a triangle has 3 sides, therefore 3 x 2 = 6 vertices.

3) The number of edges of a prism is triple the number of sides on the base – a pentagon has 5 sides, therefore 5 x 3 = 15 edges.

To find average speed, time and distance we must follow the formulas.

Distance = Average speed X time

Time= Distance / Speed
Speed= Distance / Time
