Good Afternoon Everyone,

I hope you had a wonderful day! Tomorrow is day 5 (Gym, Music and Bake Sale). Please wear your gym clothes to school and bring your gym shoes. Tomorrow  is our last day of the bake sale, so bring in your money to enjoy some delicious treats. Thursday is casual day and Friday is house tie day!

Please have a small chat with your child regarding proper hygiene with regards to coughing/sneezing and hand washing! Please know we are taking all precautions necessary at the school and in the classroom.

Reproductive talk:

This Friday, we will be splitting up the boys and girls as we will be discussing both male and female reproductive parts and puberty. Mrs. Hocevar and myself will be talking to the girls and Mr. Orr will be talking to the boys. A letter has been sent home informing you of this talk. Please note we not be discussing how babies are made. Last year we did get asked the question of how it happens, but we will let you have that conversation with your child. Our conversation last year brought up some questions and good conversations that parents had with their child, so please expect it! If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me.

Our next extra-curricular activity is skiing/snowboarding at Glen Eden Ski Resort. The dates of the trip are January 22, February 19 and March 4. Please do not order lunch for these days; it will not be saved nor will a reimbursement be given. We will be leaving at 7:00 AM and returning by 4:00 PM at the latest. All rentals are included, however students are more than welcome to bring their own. Please do not order hot lunch for these days as we will be eating lunch at the ski hill – students are welcome to bring money to purchase food and drink items. Students must ensure they are dressed in appropriate ski gear; warm socks, long johns with comfy clothes, snow pants, warm mitts, a face protector (if possible) and a ski jacket. Please note that if students chose skiing, they will ski all three times. If students pick snowboarding, they will snowboard all three times. All students will have to pass each level before they are granted permission to ski on the big hill, no matter what their experience.

March Break Camps
Forms have been sent home regarding SJA’s awesome Adventure Camp. The wonderful camp will run from Monday to Friday both weeks of the March Break (March 9-13 & March 16-20) and is offered to student from JK to Grade 6. Field trips will take place on Thursday afternoons. Meal plans are also included if you chose to do so. Cash or QuickBooks payments only please. Don’t delay; register today!

Inquiry into Language
Today students continued to memorize their speech. From Wednesday-Friday we will do our in-class speech recital.

A note on speeches
Speeches are a 4-5 week process. A package was sent home, as students needed to complete some work at home over the holidays. Grade 5 students will be expected to write and memorize a 3-5 minute persuasive speech on a topic of their choice; research will be needed, along with proper citation. When we are back from the break we will begin by writing our three body paragraphs; one a day using teacher guided writing. We will then write our introduction and conclusion. Time will be given edit, re-write and memorize in class. Please see below an outline of dates that we must stick to (as found in the speech package)!

Due DateItem

Monday, January 27 and Tuesday, January 28 Write good copy of speech and start to memorize
Wednesday, January 29 – Friday, January 31In-class speech recital
Monday, February 3 In-class speech competition (top 3 from each Grade 5 class)

Inquiry into Mathematics
Today applied the knowledge learned yesterday to todays activity. Students were placed into groups and were asked to walk 5 m, 10 m, 15 m and 20 m. Each student was timed, to see how long it took them to walk each distance. Using the data that was recorded, students created a graph and found a pattern if there was any.

Our Patterns in Numbers and Geometry Unit will take us until the first week of February.

Reminders:
We can represent patterns through using a model, a table, writing a pattern rule and drawing a graph. Remember when writing a pattern rule you must write: Start at 1. Add 4 each time (example).

Input/Output: Remember that the pattern rule must work for all input numbers. All graphs must have a title, an x (Input numbers) and y axis (Output numbers) label and an appropriate scale.

 Euler’s Formula and other patterns for prisms - the number of faces + the number of vertices – 2 = the number of edges (F + V – 2 = E). For example, a triangular prism has 5 faces and 6 vertices. Therefore, 5 + 6 – 2 = 11 – 2 = 9, so a triangular prism has 9 edges.
Some other patterns for prisms are:

1) The number of faces of a prism is 2 more than the number of sides on the base – A hexagon has 6 sides, therefore 6 + 2 = 8, so 8 faces.

2) The number of vertices on a prism is double the number of sides on the base – a triangle has 3 sides, therefore 3 x 2 = 6 vertices.

3) The number of edges of a prism is triple the number of sides on the base – a pentagon has 5 sides, therefore 5 x 3 = 15 edges.

To find average speed, time and distance we must follow the formulas.

Distance = Average speed X time

Time= Distance / Speed

Speed= Distance / Time

Unit of Inquiry
Today students continued to work on their summative project in groups.

from now until Thursday, January 30, students will be working on their summative project in groups. Presentations will take place January 30. This summative will consist of researching and preparing a presentation about a human body system that we did not cover in class. Students will be using their summative package, which will assist them in completing the summative. Students will be responsible for including a diagram of the system, what organs are part of that system, how the system works, what that system is responsible for, how that system is connected to others in the body, and how to keep that system healthy.

Groups:

1: Michael, Kaitlyn, Alexander, Pranati - The Endocrine system
2: Vidhi, Daksh, Medha, Brandon - The Immune system
3: Laura, Suditi, Ben, Aarsh - The Muscular system
4: Nicole, Alex, Jorvin, Adam - The Nervous system
