Good Afternoon Everyone,

I hope you had a terrific day! Monday is day 3 (Gym and Music). Please wear your gym uniform to school and bring your gym shoes. Wednesday and Thursday is our monthly bake sale. Thursday is casual day. 


Reproductive talk:
Next Friday, we will be splitting up the boys and girls as we will be discussing both male and female reproductive parts and puberty. Mrs. Hocevar and myself will be talking to the girls and Mr. Orr will be talking to the boys. A letter has been sent home informing you of this talk. Please note we not be discussing how babies are made. Last year we did get asked the question of how it happens, but we will let you have that conversation with your child. Our conversation last year brought up some questions and good conversations that parents had with their child, so please expect it! If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me. 

A note regarding re-registration packages:

Dear SJA Families, 

Just a reminder that the SJA re-registration process is underway. To reserve your child’s 2020-2021 place at St. Jude’s Academy, complete and return your child’s re-registration forms and payment to Reception by Tuesday, February 18, 2020 at 4:00 pm.

After this date and time, any available grade-level spaces will be open to new families on waitlists.

In addition, the deadline for our  priority enrolment into our JK Program is Friday, January 17, 2020, a letter is attached with more information.

Inquiry into Language
Today some students continued to type up their speech and the rest of the students began to memorize. On the weekend please memorize your speech as we will begin to recite our speeches in front of the class next week. 










A note on speeches
Speeches are a 4-5 week process. A package was sent home, as students needed to complete some work at home over the holidays. Grade 5 students will be expected to write and memorize a 3-5 minute persuasive speech on a topic of their choice; research will be needed, along with proper citation. When we are back from the break we will begin by writing our three body paragraphs; one a day using teacher guided writing. We will then write our introduction and conclusion. Time will be given edit, re-write and memorize in class. Please see below an outline of dates that we must stick to (as found in the speech package)!

Inquiry into Mathematics
Today we learned about Euler's formula. Euler’s Formula and other patterns for prisms - the number of faces + the number of vertices – 2 = the number of edges (F + V – 2 = E). For example, a triangular prism has 5 faces and 6 vertices. Therefore, 5 + 6 – 2 = 11 – 2 = 9, so a triangular prism has 9 edges. 
Some other patterns for prisms are:

1) The number of faces of a prism is 2 more than the number of sides on the base – A hexagon has 6 sides, therefore 6 + 2 = 8, so 8 faces.

2) The number of vertices on a prism is double the number of sides on the base – a triangle has 3 sides, therefore 3 x 2 = 6 vertices.

3) The number of edges of a prism is triple the number of sides on the base – a pentagon has 5 sides, therefore 5 x 3 = 15 edges.

Before students were given the formula, they were asked to try and figure out the formula in groups.

Our Patterns in Numbers and Geometry Unit will take us until the first week of February.

Reminders:
We can represent patterns through using a model, a table, writing a pattern rule and drawing a graph. Remember when writing a pattern rule you must write: Start at 1. Add 4 each time (example). 

Input/Output: Remember that the pattern rule must work for all input numbers. All graphs must have a title, an x (Input numbers) and y axis (Output numbers) label and an appropriate scale.



Unit of Inquiry
Today students continued to work on their summative project in groups.

from now until Thursday, January 30, students will be working on their summative project in groups. Presentations will take place January 30. This summative will consist of researching and preparing a presentation about a human body system that we did not cover in class. Students will be using their summative package, which will assist them in completing the summative. Students will be responsible for including a diagram of the system, what organs are part of that system, how the system works, what that system is responsible for, how that system is connected to others in the body, and how to keep that system healthy.
