A note from Mr. Foster and Ms. Gandy:
Mr. Foster’s Farmers Market and Ms. Gandy’s Groceries
As part of their summative assessment the grade one classes have decided to open a market to complement their organization unit. The market will include fruits, vegetables, drinks and other healthy snacks. It will be held in rooms 12 and 18. The market will take place all day Thursday, January 23rd and Friday, January 24th. All profits made will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House.
Our next extra-curricular activity is skiing/snowboarding at Glen Eden Ski Resort. The dates of the trip are January 22, February 19 and March 4. We will be leaving at 7:00 AM sharp and returning by 4:00 PM at the latest. All rentals are included, however students are more than welcome to bring their own. Please do not order hot lunch for these days as we will be eating lunch at the ski hill – students are welcome to bring money to purchase food and drink items. Students must ensure they are dressed in appropriate ski gear; warm socks, long johns with comfy clothes, snow pants, warm mitts, a face protector and a ski jacket. Please note that if students chose skiing, they will ski all three times. If students pick snowboarding, they will snowboard all three times. All students will have to pass each level before they are granted permission to ski on the big hill, no matter what their experience.
Inquiry into Language
Today students re-wrote their rough copy with all their edits, if it was not finished in class it is for homework due tomorrow.
Reminders:
Inferring is a conclusion we reach by reasoning. Data can be displayed using a line graph, bar graph and a circle graph. A "break" in a graph allows you to jump numbers on a scale.
To find the mean, you add up the total number of all the data and then divide by how many numbers are in that set of data.
A note on speeches
Speeches are a 4-5 week process. A package was sent home, as students needed to complete some work at home over the holidays. Grade 5 students will be expected to write and memorize a 3-5 minute persuasive speech on a topic of their choice; research will be needed, along with proper citation. When we are back from the break we will begin by writing our three body paragraphs; one a day using teacher guided writing. We will then write our introduction and conclusion. Time will be given edit, re-write and memorize in class. Please see below an outline of dates that we must stick to (as found in the speech package)!
Due Date | Item |
Over the Christmas Break | Read over speech package, brainstorm topic, choose topic, research, complete evidence in a persuasive speech page, read the rubric |
Wednesday, January 8 | Watch video samples, read a written sample, tell teacher topic, Paragraph #1 and revision |
Thursday, January 9 | Paragraph #2 and revision of previous paragraph |
Monday, January 13 | Paragraph #3 and revision of previous paragraphs |
Tuesday, January 14 |
Begin introduction, revision of introduction
|
Wednesday, January 15 | Conclusion and revision of previous paragraphs |
Thursday, January 16 – Friday, January 24 | Work on rough copies of entire speech and continue to revise |
Monday, January 27 and Tuesday, January 28 | Write good copy of speech and start to memorize |
Wednesday, January 29 – Friday, January 31 | In-class speech recital |
Monday, February 3 | In-class speech competition (top 3 from each Grade 5 class) |
Friday, February 7 | SJA Oral Competition |
Thursday, February 27 | SJA vs TMA Oral Competition |

Inquiry into Mathematics
Today we learned how to conduct a survey. There is 4 parts to conducting a survey:
1. Writing a survey question: the question should be understood in the same way by all people, all possible answers to the question should be provided... including "other" and the question should not lead people to answer a certain way. Some example questions are: What is your favourite sport, Where would you like to travel next or What is your favourite holiday?
2. Complete a tally chart: make sure you create a chart with all the options on one side and the tallies on the other.

2. Complete a tally chart: make sure you create a chart with all the options on one side and the tallies on the other.
3. Graph Results: remember when you are graphing you need to include an appropriate scale, labels, title and colour.
4. Make inferences from the data
Data Management is a short unit. Our test for this unit will consist of students creating a survey question, surveying a certain number of students, creating three separate graphs and inferring information from their graphs. This will roughly take 3 days to complete. As of now, it will begin Friday, January 17 and continue till Tuesday, January 21. Please note no review will be completed for this unit. Our next math unit is also a short one, Patterns in Numbers and Geometry, and will take us until the first week of February.
Inferring is a conclusion we reach by reasoning. Data can be displayed using a line graph, bar graph and a circle graph. A "break" in a graph allows you to jump numbers on a scale.
To find the mean, you add up the total number of all the data and then divide by how many numbers are in that set of data.
8, 8, 8, 8, 9, 9, 9, 11, 12, 20 are the number in the set of data.
1) Add up all of the numbers = 102
2) Divide by 10 (as there are 10 numbers in the set of data) = 102/10 = 10.2
The median is the middle number when the data is arranged in order. When there is an odd number of data, the median is the middle number. When there is an even number of data, the median is the mean of the two numbers.
95, 92, 87, 85, 80, 78, 76, 73, 70, 66, 54 are the numbers in a set of data. The median of this set is 78 because there are a odd number of data. There are 5 numbers before 78 and 5 numbers after 78.
95, 92, 87, 85, 80, 78, 76, 73, 72, 70, 66, 54 are the numbers in a set of data. Because there is an even number of data, we have to find the mean to find the median. The middle numbers are 75 and 76, therefore 78 + 76/2 = 77 and that is the median.
The mode is the number that occurs most frequently in a given set of data.
Types of Graphs:
Scatter plot - show a upward or downward trent
** key items you must include when completing a graph: title, labels, scale, a key, colour and to always use a ruler!
To plot coordinates on a grid we use ordered pairs.
For example, (6,2).
The first number (6) goes on the horizontal axis (the x axis that goes left to right). It tells the horizontal distance from the origin (0).
The second number (2) goes on the vertical axis (the y axis, it goes up and down) and tells the vertical distance from the origin (0).
Types of Graphs:
Pictograph - uses pictures and key to show data
Circle graph - shows parts of a whole
Bar graph - compares choices by how much or how many
Line graph - shows a variable over time

Unit of Inquiry
Today students continued to work on their summative project in groups.
from now until Thursday, January 30, students will be working on their summative project in groups. Presentations will take place January 30. This summative will consist of researching and preparing a presentation about a human body system that we did not cover in class. Students will be using their summative package, which will assist them in completing the summative. Students will be responsible for including a diagram of the system, what organs are part of that system, how the system works, what that system is responsible for, how that system is connected to others in the body, and how to keep that system healthy.
Groups:
1: Michael, Kaitlyn, Alexander, Pranati - The Endocrine system
2: Vidhi, Daksh, Medha, Brandon - The Immune system
3: Laura, Suditi, Ben, Aarsh - The Muscular system
4: Nicole, Alex, Jorvin, Adam - The Nervous system
