Winter uniforms begin on Tuesday, October 15th, after our Thanksgiving weekend. All students in Grade 4-6 will need to have all pieces of the winter uniform with them everyday. The winter uniform consists of SJA gray pants/skirt, navy blue socks and black dress shoes (which they already have), a white button up long sleeve crested SJA shirt, a navy blue SJA crested sweater/sweater vest, an academic and house colour tie (to be worn every Friday) and an SJA crested blazer. Please be sure to label all pieces! Blazers must be worn during transitions and around the school, but can be taken off while in class and during lunch. If you do not have any of these pieces please contact Alpa as soon as possible at alpa@multiformcanada.com.

Please note that the uniform store will be closed from October 15^th to October 24^th. If you need to purchase any uniforms please make sure all orders are placed by October 10th 2019 by email: alpa@multiformcanada.com or online www.multiformcanada.com.

Aftercare notices have been sent out. Please ensure they are paid by October, 15th or interest will be applied. 

After care invoices have been sent out. All after care payments are due October 15^th. Please avoid interest and pay by this date! Casual Day forms have been sent home. If you would like your child to participate, please complete the form and send in the $20 cash to me no later than October 25^th.

Polar Expressions is back again this year and they are looking for students to have the chance to publish poems and short stories in an upcoming book. Information sheets have been sent. Students who are interested in this competition can do so on their own time, as class time will not be given. The deadline for poems is November 29^th and the deadline for short stories is December 6^th

Caribou Math Contest is back at SJA. SJA students have a choice to participate in the Caribou Cup, which consists of 6 mathematical contests that are held throughout the year. Each contest is offered to students in Grades ½, 3/4, 5/6, 7/8, 9/10, and 11/12. For students in Grade 1 and 2 the cost if free. For students in Grade 3 and 4 the cost is $9 and students in Grade 5 and up are $15. Students must commit to be at school by 7:15 AM with a personal laptop that is charged for each contest date. The contests will run one hour each time, from 7:30 AM to 8:30 PM. There will be a math club taking place on Wednesday mornings beginning at 8:00 AM in Room 39 for those wishing to practice. More information has been sent home. Please use the instructions at the bottom of the sheet to register your child. Good luck to those who participate! The first contest is Wednesday, October 16^th.

Inquiry into Language

Today we did not get to work on our international day as we had a fire drill.

Our annual International Day is quickly approaching and will take place on Thursday, October 17^th. This year the country we will be learning about is New Zealand. For the next few weeks, we will be busy researching and putting together a fabulous presentation on our country. Students will need devices and books from a local library to complete their research. Please see the following groups and topics for this project.

Inquiry into Mathematics

Today we learned how to find the value of a missing number in an equation. An equation is a statement that two things are equal.

We use the inverse operation to help us solve for a missing number

For addition we use subtraction

For subtraction we use addition

For multiplication we use division

For division we use multiplication

Divisibility Rules:

A whole number is divisible by:

2 if the number is even

3 if the sum of the digits is divisible by 3

4 if the number represented by the tens and ones digits is divisible by 4

5 if the ones digits is 0 or 5

6 if the number is divisible by 2 and by 3

8 if the number represented by the hundreds, tens, and ones digits is divisible by 8

9 is the sum of the digits is divisible by 9

10 if the ones digits is a 0

Unit of Inquiry

Today we continued to work on our Science Fair packages. Students worked on creating their questions. This week, we will be working our way through the Scientific Method and rough copies of our questions, hypothesis, variables, and research. Over Thanksgiving weekend, students will be required to conduct their experiment three separate times, record all observations, and write down the results. The week of October 15-18th, students will complete their good copies, create their graph, and begin board set up. The summative will be due Friday, October 18th, with presentations taking place this day. Our school wide science fair is happening on Friday, November 15th. Don’t forget to take some pictures of you completing your experiment. 

Permission forms for our Scientists in the School workshop on Tuesday, October 22^nd have been sent home – please note new date. All forms and payments (either cash or Quickbooks – no cheques please) are due by Friday, October 11^th – no exceptions. Please note that reimbursements will not be given for students who are absent the day of the workshop. If you would like to volunteer, please note that you must have a vulnerable sector screen on file with the school. If you already have one, please ensure that you sign the annual offence declaration.
