The next interactive question will be Sudoku which you students can practice now on the Caribou games page. This time grade 3/4 participants will have to solve a 6x6 Sudoku problem, although with an increased number of digits already inserted. There is no history question in the coming contest.

A kind reminder that all students must wear proper winter items for recess; this includes coat, hat, mittens, scarf, snow pants and boats. If students do not come to school with these items they will still be asked to go outside, so please come prepared!

Please return permission form by March 6th. ** Please do not order hot lunches for this day. Unfortunately, you will not be reimbursed and lunches will not be saved on this date**

Today we had our Jump Rope for Heart assembly. Nicole from Heart and Stroke taught us the importance of keeping our heart and brain healthy. She told us that the best activity to keep our heart healthy is to skip, thus is why SJA will be participating in Jump Rope for Heart on Thursday, February 14th. As a class, we have set our personal goal at $200. That is just $12.50 per person. Our school goal is $2500. Students should not be going door to door rather should be asking friends and family. A form was sent home on how to set up an online account to fundraise and what prizes you can earn through raising money! Remember if you fundraise online you win bonus prizes!! Thank you in advance for your donations!

Our class has raised $215!!! Keep up the great work Grade 5's

Congratulations to Shane for being the star student of the day!

Inquiry into Language

Today in language before we began reading we did a quick recap about what we have learned so far, as we had a long break due to speeches. Then we read chapter 10 of Shannen and the dream for a School as a class and made predictions about what we will think in the next couple of chapters. Tomorrow we will introduce our literature circles and how it will work. We will begin our circles on Monday.

Inquiry into Mathematics

Today in mathematics we focused on finding the perimeter of various polygons. We learned that there are two different ways to find perimeter. Students completed some textbook questions, and if they finished early I allowed students to start on their homework.

1. For any polygon we can add all the side lengths.
- Perimeter = 38 + 31 + 62 + 9 + 27 + 15 = 182mm

OR

2. A shortcut for a parallelogram we add the measures of the longer side and shorter side. Then multiply by 2. E.g. P = (l + w ) x 2.
- Perimeter = (11+6) x 2
                      = 17 x 2
                      = 34 cm

** Please see the below picture for the two different shapes that correspond with the examples above.

Unit of Inquiry

Today in UOI we learned about the different types of government. We learned about democracy, republic, monarchy, oligarchy, and dictatorship. Students completed an activity sheet where they had to choose two different types of government and name the pros and cons. We also learned about the different levels of government (federal, provincial and municipal). Students inquired about who our prime minster, premier and mayor of Mississauga are.
