Taking Action

What is Action?

Many people think that Action is easy to define. It is something you do, right? But Action is much more than that. Action is a part of who we are. If we want to change the world we need to start with changing ourselves. But sometimes change is hard. How do we make changes to the way we think so we can help the world?

If we want children to make a difference in the world we need to help them personalize the action they take, and understand that it is not just a mandate from their teachers and parents, but a life long mindset they develop.

Taking action can happen at any age. It’s all about how we as parents, educators, and the community, support children and youth as they begin the learning journey towards becoming adults that are change agents!

Units of Inquiry

Where we are in place and time - A Voyage Back in Time

An inquiry into orientation in place and time; personal histories; homes and journeys; the discoveries, explorations and migrations of humankind; the relationships between and the interconnectedness of individuals and civilizations, from local and global perspectives.

Central Idea:Early civilizations have shaped how the world is today.

Key Concepts:

Form, Change

Lines of Inquiry:

· Characteristics of different ancient civilizations

· Physical and social aspects of ancient civilizations

· The contributions that ancient civilizations have made toward contemporary societies

Who we are - The Human Body

An inquiry into the nature of the self; beliefs and values; personal, physical, mental, social and spiritual health; human relationships including families, friends, communities, and cultures; rights and responsibilities; what it means to be human.

Central Idea: The human body is a highly organized structure made up of different systems that work together to accomplish functions necessary to sustain life.

Key Concepts:Form, Function, Connection

Lines of Inquiry:

· The structure and function of systems and organs of the human body

· The relationship between organs within each system

· Factors contributing to good health

How we organize ourselves - Vote. It's the Right Thing to Do

An inquiry into the interconnectedness of human-made systems and communities; the structure and function of organizations; societal decision-making; economic activities and their impact on humankind and the environment.

Central Idea: The governing system in a society is responsible for managing citizens and establishing rights.

Concepts: Perspective, Responsibility

Lines of Inquiry:

· The structures, functions, and interactions of local government

· The rights and responsibilities of members of society

· The role of government in society

Sharing the planet - Variety is the Spice of Life

An inquiry into rights and responsibilities in the struggle to share finite resources with other people and with other living things; communities and the relationships within and between them; access to equal opportunities; peace and conflict resolution.

Central Idea: Maintaining biodiversity is critical to the health of the planet

Key Concepts:Function, Connection, Responsibility

Lines of Inquiry:

The classification of diverse organisms according to specific characteristics

The contributions of diversity to the stability of natural systems

Human impact on diversity

How we express ourselves - Creativity Through Coding

An inquiry into the ways in which we discover and express ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs and values; the ways in which we reflect on, extend and enjoy our creativity; our appreciation of the aesthetic.

Central Idea: An understanding that Coding can enable to create and communicate.

Key Concepts:

Connection, Function, Causation

Lines of Inquiry:

How coding allows us to express ourselves virtually.

The effects of programming/coding, and how they impact our lives.

The many coding/ programming platforms that facilitate communication and how we use them in our everyday lives.
