I hope everyone had a great night! Tomorrow is our ski trip to Glen Eden. Students must arrive at the school no later than 6:45 AM as the bus will leave promptly at 7:00 and will not wait for late students. We will return to school for dismissal at the end of the day. Girls are asked to either put their hair in a braid or low ponytail please. Students must bring proper outdoor ski gear - snow pants, winter coats, mitts and a neck warmer. Students may also bring a hat to wear outside, but the helmets they will wear when skiing are similar to hats. Students may wear warm, comfortable casual clothing for under their outdoor gear. It has been suggested to bring a change of clothing as the conditions are looking warm and wet, with rain and slushy conditions in the forecast. Students have the option of bringing a disposable lunch or purchasing lunch. It can be rather expensive, so please ensure you are sending enough money. If students have their own equipment, they may bring it, however we are unsure of the type of bus we will be using tomorrow, so the equipment may have to stay at school. Glen Eden will have rentals for everyone.
A note from Ms. Melissa regarding re-registration packages - Just a friendly reminder that re-registration packages are due no later than Monday, February 11. After this time, spots will be opened up to the public and your child will not be guaranteed a space for next year. We look forward to seeing you back for next year! **If we are the first class to have all registration forms returned we will have a pizza party and movie afternoon the Friday before March Break. Drinks and treats will be included!!**
A note regarding speeches – Due to our growing population at SJA, this year poems/stories/speeches will be split into two days. On Thursday, February 7th, JK-Grade 2 will recite their poems and stories and on Friday, February 8th, Grade 4-8 will recite their speeches.
The Grade 5 team sent home a notice regarding our field trip to The Legislative Assembly of Ontario in Toronto on Wednesday, March 27th. The cost of the trip is $7 per student. Please return permission form by March 6th. ** Please do not order hot lunches for this day. Unfortunately, you will not be reimbursed and lunches will not be saved on this date**
Today we had our Jump Rope for Heart assembly. Nicole from Heart and Stroke taught us the importance of keeping our heart and brain healthy. She told us that the best activity to keep our heart healthy is to skip, thus is why SJA will be participating in Jump Rope for Heart on Thursday, February 14th. As a class, we have set our personal goal at $200. That is just $12.50 per person. Our school goal is $2500. Students should not be going door to door rather should be asking friends and family. A form was sent home on how to set up an online account to fundraise and what prizes you can earn through raising money! Remember if you fundraise online you win bonus prizes!! Thank you in advance for your donations!
A kind reminder that all students must wear proper winter items for recess; this includes coat, hat, mittens, scarf, snow pants and boats. If students do not come to school with these items they will still be asked to go outside, so please come prepared!
A note from Mr. Foster, Ms. Gandy, and Ms. Brasil:
As part of our summative assessment the Grade One classes have decided to open a market to complement our organization unit. The market will include fruits, vegetables, drinks, and other healthy snacks. It will be held in rooms 25, 28 and 29. The market will take place all day Thursday, January. 24th and Friday, January. 25th. All profits made will be donated to the Sick Kid’s Hospital.
A message from Mrs. Hayward: Our book fair will be taking place during the week of February 4th to 8th.
March Break Camp!
Our class has raised $150!! Keep it up Grade 5's
Action Star
Congratulations to Aamna for being our star student yesterday, and to Daniel for being our star student of the day!
Inquiry into Language
Today in language students focused on typing their second rough copy. If it is not completed in class today it will be due on Thursday. On Thursday/ Friday I will go over and edit students second copies and if you would like to, you are welcome to go over their speeches to make sure there is no spelling errors, making sure it is persuasive and proper punctuation. Once it is all edited, students should revise their work to have a good copy. We will begin to memorize and time our speeches once good copies are completed.

Inquiry into Mathematics
Today in math we learned about probability and percent. We learned how to show the probability of something in 4 different ways:
Using words: only 2 of the 20 tins are chicken. So, it is unlikely to get a tin of chicken
Using a fraction: Two of the 20 tins are chicken ---> 2/20 or 1/10
Using a decimal: the probability of picking a chicken is 1/10 ---> 0.1
Using a percent: To express 2/20, you must find equivalent fractions.. Please see below
We have altered the dates of our math test. As we did with our pre-assessment, we are going to combine the math tests. Instead of writing the Data Management test on January 21st, we are going to jump right into Probability. This unit will take us one week from Monday, January 21st to Friday, January 25th. We will do a small review on Monday, January 28th and then will spend the rest of the week writing the math test. Students will be expected to come up with a survey question, six options, and will be required to survey 50 people. Students will use tally marks and then will transfer their data to a pictograph and bar graph. Next, they will be asked to infer at least five different things from their graphs. Students will also be given data to create a line graph and scatter plot. Finally, students will be asked questions about probability. This most likely will take us three to four days.
Points to remember:
To find the mean you add up the total number and then divide by the total number of data. For example if the numbers in our data are 8, 10, 6, 4 you add them up to get 28 then divide it by 4 to get 7. Therefore your mean is 7.
The mode is the number that appears the most in a given set of data. For example if the numbers in our data were 3, 6, 4, 8 4. 2, 9, 4 our mode would be 4.
To find the median you first need to order your data from least to greatest. Then whichever number falls in the middle is your median. For example if our data numbers are 1, 3, 2, 9, 5, 7, 8 I arrange them in order 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 9 and the middle numbers is 5 so that is my median. If there happens to be two middle numbers you add those numbers together and divide by 2. For example 1, 2, 3, 5, 5, 7, 8, 9, I would take 5 + 5 = 10/2 = 5.
Be sure to remember your titles, labels, and appropriate scales when constructing your graphs.
Pictograph - uses pictures and key to show data
Circle graph - shows parts of a whole
Bar graph - compares choices by how much or how many
Line graph - shows a variable over time
Scatter plot - shows how two sets of data are related - it is a graph of ordered pairs on a coordinate grid
The bottom axis is horizontal (the x axis) and the other axis is the vertical axis (the y axis). The first number in the ordered pair goes on the horizontal axis and the second number in the ordered pair goes on the vertical axis.
When conducting a survey, you first to need create a question – What is your favourite TV show? Next you need give options – Flash, Arrow, The Big Bang Theory, Modern Family, and Young Sheldon. Thirdly, comes the tally chart. You will use this to keep track of the answers of the people you survey. Next, you will put the data into a graph. Finally, you will infer information from your graph.
Probability tells us the likelihood of an event.
Experimental probabilities, which are based on the results of an experiment. To find the experimental probability, you take the number of times an outcome occurs and divide by the number the times the experiment is conducted.
Theoretical probabilities, which are done without conducting experiments. To find the theoretical probability, you take the number of favourable outcomes and divide by number of possible outcomes.
Unit of Inquiry
Today students continued to work on their summative in groups. The groups are as follows:
Group 1- Shane, Jaiden, Marcus Daniel: Muscular system
